Companies: Collaboration between R&B Brewing and Eight and a Half
Cause: The Reclining Figure statue at Dude Chilling Park
Year: 2017
While Douglas and I were out this weekend enjoying the unusually balmy weather, we stopped into Denman Beer Wine & Spirits to pick up a few single cans of craft beer. As I was waiting for Douglas to make his choices, I spotted this poster by the fridge.

25 cents from each 4-pack sold to go towards repairing “The Dude” Statue in Dude Chilling Park.

Photo Description: Reclining Figure. The sculpture, “Reclining Figure” by artist Michael Dennis was installed in 1991, a generous gift from the Mount Pleasant Community Centre Association. “Reclining Figure” was carved in cedar and installed at ground level. The sculpture has deteriorated over time and needs to be replace. Park Board is working with the artist to remove the sculpture. It will be moved to the artist’s studio where he will begin preparations for the creation of a more permanent version of the work cast in bronze. The Mount Please Community Centre Association is supporting the creation of the bronze work by collecting donations to assist with the cost. Timing of the replacement is dependent on the success of the fundraising campaign. Anyone interested in contributing can contact the community centre at MtPleasant.CommunityCentre@vancouver.ca. “Reclining Figure” frequently referred to as the “dude chilling” inspired a companion work by Victor Briestensky in the form of a sign mimicking Park Board standard signage and proclaiming the park ‘Dude Chilling Park’.
I wonder when the bronze reincarnation of Reclining Figure will return to the park.
In the meanwhile, share and drink up for this community cause.
